Elon Musk demands another huge payday from Tesla
  + stars: | 2024-01-16 | by ( David Goldman | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
New York CNN —Elon Musk says he wants a significantly larger stake in Tesla than the one that already made him the richest person on the planet. Enough to be influential, but not so much that I can’t be overturned,” Musk wrote in a post on X. Musk and the Tesla board of directors were accused of breaching their fiduciary duties for waste and unjust enrichment. Musk on Monday said he and Tesla are waiting for ruling in the case before they agree to a new pay package. But Musk said a dual-class system at Tesla was a nonstarter, blaming a “post-IPO Delaware.” It’s unclear exactly what Musk meant by that.

CNN —My wife and I were recently invited to Thanksgiving dinner at the home of a friend. Nearly everyone is confronted by intensely emotional conflicts, with the upheaval roiling workplaces, college campuses, schools and other places. Arguments over Israel are nothing new, but the rifts are deeper and more lacerating than I can ever remember. In one particularly painful and personal case, a dear friend and I have disagreed for decades about antisemitism and Israel. Love may find a way, if not to move mountains, at least to allow space for durable resolutions.

The Game of Their Lives

As the players idled by the chain-link fence at the side of the field, taking great gulps of air and water and conducting an immediate autopsy of the game that had just finished, they focused their attention on three outstanding bones of contention. The first considered whether a penalty that had not been awarded absolutely should have been, as an aggrieved plaintiff was claiming. The second investigated if a particularly egregious foul was premeditated (yes) and/or warranted (also yes). Each player had to dig into wallets or pockets to find five pounds — just over $6 — to pay their share for the use of the field. As they strolled stiffly to the parking lot, the squabbling gave way to discussion of plans for the rest of the evening, and for next week.

West African leaders on Sunday threatened military action against Niger, where soldiers seized power in a coup on Wednesday, unless the country’s democratically elected president is restored to office within a week. The demand was issued by the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, a 15-member regional bloc, after a crisis summit meeting in Nigeria. It echoed earlier calls by the United States and France, major security allies of Niger, threatening to cut aid and military ties unless the deposed president, Mohamed Bazoum, is restored. After coup supporters massed on Sunday outside the French Embassy in the capital, Niamey, calling for the withdrawal of French troops, President Emmanuel Macron issued a stiffly worded warning. Any attack on France’s citizens or interests in Niger will be met with an “immediate and uncompromising” reaction, Mr. Macron said in a statement.

It marks the moment in June of 1865 when Union troops arrived in Texas to inform enslaved African Americans that they were free by executive decree. Though it commemorates a moment when enslaved African Americans were freed, the US is still held captive by several myths about slavery and people like Cummins. 1: African Americans were ‘freed’ after the Civil War endedThere is a popular conception that the formerly enslaved were freed after the Civil War ended. It is what historians call a “Slave Bible.” It is a copy of a Bible that was used by British missionaries to convert enslaved African Americans. Kin Cheung/APThe historical record shows that enslaved African Americans revitalized Christianity in other ways, historians say.

CNN —For those wondering where he has been for the last few years, Richard Lewis has an answer. He’s undergone surgeries for his shoulder, back and hips, and has been dealing with another health challenge. “Two years ago I started walking a little stiffly, I was shuffling my feet and I went to a neurologist and they gave me a brain scan and I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease,” Lewis, 75, said in his video. And I’m on the right meds, so I’m cool.”Lewis said he’s “finished with standup,” instead “focusing on writing and acting.” He added that he is happy and doing well. According to the Mayo Clinic, Parkinson’s “is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by the nerves.”Other celebs who are also living with Parkinson’s disease include singer Neil Diamond and actor Michael J.
CNN —Ford has some interesting ideas about stuff that self-driving cars might soon be able to do. Besides freeing us from the tedium of commuting, cars, as envisioned in a Ford patent application, could repossess themselves. Before getting to the point that the car would simply drive itself away, delinquent payers would be subject to a litany of annoyances. If the owner persists in ignoring these messages, the vehicle would, in the words of Ford’s patent application, “initiate execution of a multi-step repossession procedure.”Step one involves making the owner pay in other ways. It may not have been your idea of the “car of the future” but, if you don’t pay up, it just might be.
Russia is running a campaign of propaganda lessons to rally support for its invasion of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin at a rally in Moscow held in March 2022, a few weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine. An image from the lesson materials showing Russian armored personnel carriers marked with the Z symbol from the invasion of Ukraine. But, the union said, "huge internal resistance" from Russia's teachers forced officials to edit out most references to the "special military operation" and achieve its aims less directly. It's the effect on young children, whose whole world is their school and family, that scares me."
Tesla robot slowly walks on stage at AI Day

Washington, DC CNN —Tesla revealed on Friday a prototype of a humanoid robot that it says could be a future product for the automaker. The robot, dubbed Optimus by Tesla, walked stiffly on stage at Tesla’s AI Day, slowly waved at the crowed and gestured with its hands for roughly one minute. Tesla plans to use its AI expertise to develop a humanoid robot. Compared to that, it’s going to be very impressive.”Tesla is not the first automaker to develop a humanoid robot. In its final form, Asimo was a child-size humanoid robot capable of untethered walking, running, climbing and descending stairs, and manipulating objects with its fingers.
Bill Walton’s Long, Strange Tale of N.B.A. Survival

Bill Walton arrived at the San Diego Natural History Museum carrying a large black chair. It’s so large that it made even Walton, one of basketball’s dominating giants, look small. We were standing inside the building, near the skeleton of a dinosaur (Allosaurus fragilis, the sign said), watching him approach. I had come to San Diego to speak with Walton about his life: the magic rainbows interweaving over the bottomless, flaming abyss. It suggests an existence largely shaped by dark matter — all the things that didn’t happen, that never coalesced, that went missing.
